Being better

When it comes to a new year and those famous resolutions involving the healthier option, fitter route and just generally being better you can bet your bottom dollar that most people have this in mind. Admitedlly we don't, but that's only because we're certain that we'll fail. And as usual we like to do things differently - and six months down the line we've finally decided that actually, things do need to change around here.
Whenever we mention eating better, getting fitter, there will always be one person quick to judge why we feel the need to 'because we're tiny'. Personally (note personally), I am not as slim as people may believe (doesn't mean I can photoshop, mind!) and put it all down to dressing well for my shape. My hips and thighs are fairly big.. But you wouldn't always notice that about me right? Clothing is a funny one really, and what you see on the outside, isn't all what you see hiding underneath (hey I'm not a hairy monster though...!). So please, don't judge.

We used to be pretty terrible for dinners, opting to eat huge dollops of nutella on crumpets but since Little B has a regular job we've been fairly good (apart from the occasional evening when Domino's send us emails with offers.. we can't help it!). We've always eaten a good amount of fruit and veg, but never enough. We're trying to favour fruit over chocolate most days (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...) and buying sweet fruits is certainly helping to satisfy that incredibly sweet and snacky tooth of mine. I'm still keeping with my smoothie every morning, and our evenings are spent cooking something tasty together which helps. We like food, and that's all there is to it.

I don't drink enough, and that's a known fact for years (hand me snacks over water anyday), but I am fully aware that it's a huge part of our life which we almost take for granted I guess. I like the taste of drinks (unless it's a tequilla or sambucca...) but felt that water was getting a little, dare I say it, boring. And after trying some cucumber water, I knew where I wanted to be. I wanted cucumber in my drink. Like I used to as a child (when I was a little one and we went on holiday, all I'd eat was cucumber at dinner. By the plateful FYI!). I'm still trying to drink more than I used to.. We're working on it.

So, we started running a few months ago. I bought brand new trainers and everything. Yeah. It lasted three days.  We kinda don't mention it anymore.. But last night Little B and I tied up our laces as soon we got in from work, and ran. We ran to the nearest park where we had a typical Bridesmaids moment and decided to imitate what a personal trainer was doing. We busted out some squats, sit ups, star jumps and lunges until my uncomfortable panties annoyed me, where we then walked the long way home. And actually, I enjoyed this. Apart from the hair washing situation. But that's a completely different matter...

  2. I really enjoyed reading this, it made me giggle :) Josh and I used to have a relatively healthy diet and exercise regularly but our lifestyle at the moment is making it a bit tricky - we have to make do with the food we have around us at the time and making time for exercise and having the right equipment on hand is hard. But hopefully when we're settled again it'll be back :)

I also have the same, with some people telling me I don't need to diet and exercise. It doesn't always matter what you look like to them on the outside, maybe I want to exercise to just be healthier overall, not necessarily to lose weight which people tend to assume. But sometimes I do, they can't see my little belly that stays well hidden under clever clothes ;) haha.

It looks like you're well on the way to being very healthy Littles - all the fruit and cucumber water looks so tasty!

  3. I loved this post! I can hold my hands up high and say that at the beginning of the year I vowed to myself to change my lifestyle, but here we are in June and i've not changed haha!
I do tell a little lie though as i've been going to a circuit training class every Tuesday since February, so that counts as a lifestyle change I guess?
Last week, my boyfriend and I decided to go no carbs for a week, we (surprisingly) did fairly well, minus a few slip ups mid week(I'd had a terrible day and veg just wasn't filling the frustration)
As for the running though, it lasted three days with me too haha! I live abroad, in Gibraltar, and it's rather warm right now, to say the least, and running for an hour in this heat isn't something I think my body would actually allow me to do haha!
oOoOo Cucumber water? I need to try that! I love lemon water, especially in summer, it's super refreshing and apparently super good for you!
    I hope you're having a good week :)

  4. I'm all for finding ways to enjoy being healthy! It's so hard when there's cheese, butter, wine and all manner of delicious and naughty things. I went to Google for breakfast once and they did strawberry and mint water. It was epic, but takes a long time to make...

  5. I love fruit and veg and eat a lot of it, so that's never been a problem for me, but chocolate and cookies and so on.... well, that's so difficult to say no to! As for exercising, I haven't done that in ages, but posts like these make me want to get back into it. Anyway, good luck with your new lifestyle! :)

  7. Well done on getting healthier :) It will make you feel a lot better, I'm sure - it's not just about losing a few lbs, it's about feeling good too! I'm a bit of a health freak (although do love a good treat every now and then! Life would be boring otherwise), it's my lifestyle now but I love making healthy food which tastes naughty :D Gotta try the cucumber water - I'm awful at drinking enough. Definitely more of a foodie, haha! xx

  12. There's always one judge-y judge-y type, but we all have our reasons for doing what we do, I really like your description of 'being better' because we can all do things better. Also- food is good. Food should be liked, enjoyed and generally a pleasure. However much you're trying to make 'good' choices. Food is not clean, it's not dirty. It's neither good nor bad. Food is fuel and a pleasure and it's all about the balance of sweet, salty, savoury, sour, oil, water, and density.
